Cause for Canonization of Servant of God, Paul M. Murphy, MJ

An Interview with John and Kay

John: We are John and Kay, and we…

Kay: … have been married 18 years, and have three children: Clare 16, Patrick 14 and Owen 11.

John: I came to know Paul Murphy as a young boy. I still remember him, and I remember when he died. He always left a good impression on me. Recently, within the last several years, Kay and I had been considering…

Kay: … possibly adopting a child. At the time I was 45 years old. We just thought that we, as a couple, had been blessed with our three children and had the blessings of a wonderful family, and we kind of wanted to adopt one more or two more — just to share our blessings and help a child.

John: Yes, and we had given it some prayerful consideration over the course of a year or two. Several people were praying for us also. I know several people were praying through the intercession of Paul Murphy, as did I. The main thing we were praying for was, if this is God’s will, then let it be done. Well, it was last year in Chicago, I was with my brother Steve, a consecrated member of Miles Jesu, when he was recovering from heart surgery. I called home to tell Kay about the progress that Steve was making when Kay told me that she thought she was pregnant! My goodness, what a surprise!

Kay: John told Steve and some of the other Miles Jesu members that were there at the hospital in Chicago, and they teased John and said, “Well, if it’s a boy, Paul Murphy or Paul Michael is a good name!” And John said right away; “Well, if it’s a boy that’s what it’ll be. That’s the name, because I’m sure he had a hand in this.”

John & Kay: And we didn’t want to find out beforehand if the baby was a boy or a girl; we had a name picked out either way, but Paul Michael won out. The interesting thing is that we had kind of dragged our feet on the whole issue of adopting, being concerned about how our kids would interact with a new child. We weren’t letting God handle that part. But this was an answer to our prayers! What a surprise; the Lord said, ‘Here, you’re not going to make up your minds? I’ll make it up for ya!’

John: So, we’ve been blessed with a beautiful, healthy baby boy. Little Paul Michael is healthy because I believe God has granted us that favor through the intercession of Paul Murphy. And also, Kay — as she would tell you — has always suffered setbacks of post-partum depression after each pregnancy that she’s had. The greatest one was with the first, our oldest, Clare. I prayed that there would be a minimal impact on her after this pregnancy and, praise God, she has been doing a great job. Paul Michael was born on November 30, 2006. And it was a delivery with no complications!

Kay: Yes, and for especially important for women – it was quick!
