Cause for Canonization of Servant of God, Paul M. Murphy, MJ

Testimony of Favors Received Through the Intercession of Paul M. Murphy, MJ

Testimony by Mary and Terry

Lately we've had a great experience with Paul Murphy helping our young son John at John's own request. John's been dealing with a lot of emotional and psychological difficulties because of his illness, compounded by the fact that he's got cerebral palsy, is on seizure medicine and has had to change schools. He gets very irate, very frustrated quite easily. On this particular day, John was supposed to work with his physical therapist. He would not do it. He just fought and fought and fought. Then the tutor came, and John was supposed to work with the tutor, but he wouldn't. Eventually we had to intervene and Terry (the father) had to take John up to his room. He was throwing such a fit that Terry had to physically hold him down in his bed to restrain him. John sleeps in a bunk bed and above him on the bed was the card with Paul's picture on it and the history of his life on the back.

Every night we pray to Paul Murphy, "Paul Murphy, pray for us", three times. "In union with the Sacred Heart through the Immaculate Heart of Mary we ask You to allow your humble son Paul Michael Murphy of Miles Jesu to intercede on behalf of John Malloy Ryan for his complete healing." We say that literally every night and John responds, "Pray for us; Pray for us; Pray for us".

Well, in the midst of such an emotional trial for John, when his father had to restrain him, Terry said, "John, Paul Murphy is watching over you". And John just called out to Paul, "Paul Murphy, help me!" John begged Paul from his heart. It was just incredible. Within seconds, John calmed down. We didn't do anything to him. We didn't offer him anything in the way of treats or compromises; we didn't coax him in any way. John just let it go, just left it to Paul. And Paul took it. Terry felt that John had to respond to the change, to go with the spirit of the moment. He asked John, "Are you willing to go back down" John said, "Yes", and he came back downstairs and sat with the teacher for about an hour and worked on his homework. Even to the point of being willing to go the extra step in order to finish his work. I thought that was really a good example of Paul's influence because John was willing to do a little bit extra so to do a good thing well. Paul helped John, not just in calming him down, but also in giving him a bit of endurance in difficult circumstances just when the teacher was willing to let him go. I nodded to the teacher that it was a good thing to keep going if John was willing to do so on his own, without any negotiations or bribes. Many times that is all we have. This was a very rare occasion for John during that difficult stretch.
